What is Girls Active?
Staindrop Academy has recently been accepted to take part in a nationwide campaign to increase involvement of girls in physical activity. The campaign is called Girls Active and it supports schools to understand what motivates girls to take part in physical activity. It enables teachers to work with the girls – through consultation and leadership – to make the necessary changes to their physical education (PE), sport and physical activity provision. We have already completed over 100 questionnaires from our KS3 girls which will generate a report that will be sent to us to determine the barriers that are specific to the girls of Staindrop Academy.
Over the next few weeks we will be recruiting girls to form our G.L.A.M squad who will meet regularly, discuss ideas and create an action plan to engage more girls in physical activity. At the beginning of February we will receive our report, generated from our questionnaires, to give us an insight into which areas we can develop further within our department. We have had a great start to the academic year with participation at after school clubs and results for our teams, but our overall aim is to get everyone more involved in the activities we offer. Physical activity is very important for overall health and well-being; research has shown pupils with better health and wellbeing achieve better academically with more effective social and emotional competencies.
